Wind in the Trees
Storybook tales tell of the Fae. Of the Seelie and Unseelie Courts, how each side worked. The Seelie, kinder than their brethren, with paler skin and identifying marks. The Unseelie, harsh and sometimes cruel, with dark skin and eyes as black as night. Children are warned to avoid both sides, to avoid Fairy Rings and going out at night, or agreeing to dance with any strangers that suddenly appear in the woods.
Sylvar was a boy that was told to avoid the Fae. However, unlike the others in his village he didn't listen. And it was good that he didn't.
Because the Seelie and Unseelie no longer existed. What had come instead was Lord of the Woods - a single Denizen capable of understanding and ruling over all. Sylvar and the Lord crossed paths one day while the boy was out gathering herbs, and their meeting changed everything.
The Lord offered Sylvar a chance to change his Fate, for in a few years a horrible disease would sweep over their tiny village and nobody would live. But if Sylvar came with him, became his servant willingly and stayed loyal, then the Lord would provide him the means to divert the coming tragedy. The price would be Sylvar's humanity - he would become what the Lord, and the other Denizens were. Unable to leave the forest ever again, or at least not without the Lord's permission.
It would mean giving up his mother, his father, his brothers and sisters and all his friends. Yet Sylvar understood that sometimes living life meant putting others before himself. And so he agreed to become the Lord's servant.
In the coming days, Sylvar would disappear more often than not, only coming back in the dead of night or dawn, branches and leaves stuck in his hair and clothes, mud and dirt smeared on him, and looking utterly wild. His mother scolded him and his father sent him to bed with no supper, but none of it mattered. Weeks passed, and each time Sylvar came back, something about him seemed... changed. He seemed more wild, more in-tune with nature, not wanting to be cooped up in the house for hours on end.
He avoided his fellows, the adults, and everyone else. One day a friend followed him back to the wood, and came back telling the adults that Sylvar had met with a Seelie. The adults, furious and terrified, locked Sylvar up and guarded him. Yet even that was not enough. The Lord of the Wood came for Sylvar, and told the humans that they would not stand between a Lord and his most loyal servant. Because that's what Sylvar had been doing all those nights away from home - proving himself. And the transformation was almost due.
In the end, Sylvar and the Lord left the village, ignoring the cries of his parents and siblings and friends. What came of him nobody knows, but a few years after that the plague that should have destroyed the village swept over it and nobody became ill. The neighboring villages all withered and died, but that one remained strong and healthy. Eventually the people moved to someplace less sickly, and Sylvar's name was eventually forgotten.
