The Princess's Bodyguard
Most children grow up with imaginary friends or stuffed animals. Things they can turn to for comfort in times of worry and fear. For a young princess, sick and forced to stay in the castle day in and day out, Daud was her best friend, her bodyguard, and her rock all rolled into one stuffed plush toy.
Her father had gifted it to her the first day after the royal physician had made the call that the princess would never be able to go outside without wearing thick layers, lest the sun burn her skin. She would never be able to run or jog or play rough with other children because her lungs might give in and her heart stop. Her siblings would all be able to do these things, to go out and greet the guests and meet with fellow kingdoms. She however, would remain inside.
Daud made things bearable. In the princess's mind, he was as real as any of the servants walking around the castle. He spoke to her as if she were an adult, taught her the ways of the world, how to rule gently and treat her people well.
It was not however, enough to stop her from growing up bitter at the world. Daud gave her lessons, taught her as best he could, but as the princess grew, she began to hate her world. She wanted to go out and do as her siblings did, but her parents refused to let her. Finally, in a fit of rage, she threw her curtains back, opened up the windows and climbed down the ivy into the garden.
At the first touch of the sun on her skin, she began to blister. At the rough movement of her body, her heart sped up and it became difficult to breathe. Even as Daud pleaded with her to come back, to listen, the princess continued forward, the pain swelling until eventually, she let loose a terrifying scream.
That scream brought the whole castle running. Unfortunately, they were not fast enough to save the princess, who had died defying the only rules that had kept her alive. The kingdom grieved, and eventually time marched on and took its toll. Daud was packed away in a box, sent overseas to a different family.
He became the bodyguard to a thousand different children before moving on, always. But he remembered his princess.
