I decided I would stop being unlucky... It was early October. The snow was falling early. It was too early. It would destory the crops if it continued. And so my father and I rushed to cover them before it was too late. It was. Later that night, my father prayed to the heavens asking for guidiance so we did not starve this winter. I prayed too. I prayed that I would never be unlucky again. The snow stopped. God had heard my prayers. I was never unlucky again.

Skills and Abilities:
Duncan has an uncanny ability to get anything to grow. Even a plant that once was bone dry and dead, seemed to revived under his capable hands. As a result, he is also very good with people, because like plants he can read them surprisingly well. He is quite good at mending relationships, and can quell any feud.
He is also extremely lucky, and has never lost a bet even if the adds are grossly stacked against him. He claims this is because he will rarely gamble that he is in a eternal state of "Beginner's Luck." As a result, he refuses to push it, and will often help people bid on the winning horse, often lowering his own profit.
In addition, due to working on a farm, Duncan has developed considerable upper body strength, despite his thin frame. He can lift heavy things quite high over his head, with little resistance. Something that he still does, much to the carnage of his servants, who do not wish the noble to exert himself. Still, he much prefers to do his own "heavy lifting" and often refuses help for menial tasks when it is offered.
Description:
Tanned skin and rippling muscles that seem more prominent on his torso and arms from heavy lifting and hard days bending over. His hair is a black and is cut close, though has recently been grown out to hide several scars. The back of his neck shows several as if something once attempted to rip his spinal cord out and his back, arms, and legs show the harsh abuse being knotted in thick white scars. His face is fair, though broad and usually has some sort of scrap on it. He also has a thick beard that hides an equally painful accident and when he shaves it is reveals as scar as if his jaw was ripped off. He can't be considered handsome, but he is good-looking and above average with a thin nose that does not appear broken. His eyes are a clear blue. He also typically wears work close, but since he has been promoted in life he has been dressed in ridiculous silks picked out for him.
Personality:
Duncan doesn't appear to have a mean-spirited bone in his body. It was whipped into him not to lie, though he has gotten better at concealing the truth, thanks to Demens' efforts. He is also the kind of guy that will stop whatever he is doing to help anyone who simply asks him to. While, this has often made him late as result, it seemingly boosts his esteem in many people's eyes.
Duncan is also very spiritual and believes heavily in karma. He prays regularly and attends mass. He is also a bit naive when it comes to bigger pictures and costumes, forcing him to rely on others judgement which lead him into trouble and exposes him as the joke of many pranks. This is especially true in the case of Chattie, who often makes jokes at his expense. And while, he can sometimes see what she is doing, his gentle nature often causes him to forgive her without prompting.
With Demens, however, he has gained more of a backbone and will often engage in verbal sparing matches, he would be too afraid to get into with anyone else. Still, he often apologizes when his friend falls into a state of thoughtfulness. This often earns him a good scolding, and leaves Duncan shaken for several hours afterwards. The only exception to this is when Demens says something cruel, to which end the boy will defend himself until an apology is wrestled out by either.
Biography:
Duncan's mother died in childbirth when he was just three years old and his baby sister passed just nine months after. This left him alone with a grieving father, who never quiet recovered from the two deaths. His father remarried to a school mistress when he was six, because he wanted Duncan to have an education on top of working in the fields. However, his step-mother was strict and believed in physical punishment. As a result he became quiet scared of learning and never picked up on basic arithmetic and geography, though he has a knack for reading.
When he was twelve, his family nearly starved due to an early snowstorm that destroyed their crops. Two of his younger siblings became blind with the onset of Scarlett Fever and one died months later. There he made a wish that he would never be unfortunate again. A higher being seemed to take this into consideration and by thirteen he was apprenticing over the winter in a leather smith shop to make his family one of the wealthiest farms around.
Years passed and good fortuned followed, such as saving a nobleman's rig from falling in the river by laying out stones in an attempt to learn adding and subtracting, and lefting two men twice his size out of a burning building. Each time, his subconcious actions saved a life and many began to consider him a savior, though he never thought such. By the time he was an adult, he had been promoted into knight hood and allowed to mingle amongst the upper ranks of society due to countless benefactors.
However, he soon found himself lusting after the princess, who was equally inclined towards him. His blood would not allow them to marry, though, so they ran away only to be caught before the ceremony could take place. As a result, he was sentence to death by execution. In his time in the jail cell, he bonded with his cellmate - the notorious Demens. Demens informed Duncan that he was not the monster everyone thought he was and to prove it he agreed to help steal the princess so that Duncan could rescue her and claim the glory of a worthy suitor.
