It began the day I came into the world. A thin, frail-looking Kirui, I was frowned upon by medics. My mother and my sister, however, never turned a disdainful eye upon me; to them I was perfect. And for a while, it felt as though things were.

In my second year if living, my mother fell gravely ill. Stricken with a disease so rare that even the best doctor in all of the lands wouldn't have been able to cure, she withered away to a shell of her former self. Try as we may, my sister and I were never able to find the right cure. So we watched the one who had given us life be drained of hers slowly. And when the day came where my mother finally succumbed to the illness, I left.

I had no idea where I was going to go; I just felt I had to leave. After many days of trekking through snow, heat, and sand, I finally found a place nobody would call a home. At least I could.

It was a desolate cave cut in the side of a mountain, but to me it was paradise. Because of its bleak and dismal appearance, no one dared to venture near my home. Rumors spread, as rumors do, that I was an evil spirit living in the mountainside. But I ignored the rumors, as they were false. Slowly, I turned the cave into my own type of dream home.

Things were peaceful for a time - until the adventurers came. Laden with weapons and armor, they overwhelmed me quickly. I was held to the point of a blade at one point, but I managed to knock the wielder back with a fell swoop of my claw. After that incident, I decided I would leave once again.

This time, I wandered for a much longer time. All of the other potential homes had been taken by others. I could've easily overtaken them, but at the time, I wasn't prepared for battle. Eventually, though, my wounds healed. As the bitter frost of winter blew through my scales one night, I knew I would have to fight.

It ended up being a pair of Cheran. The male, clearly trying to protect the female cowering behind him, struck at me valiantly. I deflected his attack and clawed him across his stomach. He and his mate retreated from the den quickly, him leaving a trail of blood in his wake.

After I had reassured myself they would never come back, I scoured the cave for any evidence of life, any kits. If there were any, I told myself, I would kill them immediately. When I finished my search, I lay down on the straw floor of the den, it still being warm from the Cheran. And I fell into a deep slumber.

When I woke, there was a soft purring from beside me. I looked around, startled, and noticed a small black and orange kit staring at me in awe. I arose and raised my claws in a threatening manner. The kit, maybe only a few weeks old, mirrored my movement. I lowered my claw, and it did the same. No, I thought. I can't end this little one's life.

So instead I walked to it, and extended my arm in greeting. We lived somewhat-happily for many days, and the kit grew, learned, and eventually he decided it was time for himself to leave. He disappeared without as much as a goodbye. All he left was this note:

To Char,

I know my leaving may be hard to understand. I don't want to leave, as you don't want me to. Or maybe you do. I'm not certain, but I know you must be wondering why I'm no longer here. The reason for that... I'm afraid I cannot reveal now, but you will find in due time.

The reason I wrote this was because I wanted to tell you to be strong. Be kind, and be loving. I know you were as loving a caretaker as you could've been during my childhood, but not surprisingly, you lacked a certain fire. And now, as an adult, I know why. You must have had something happen to you, something horrible that scarred you. And I understand that. But now, you must be happy, as I am. My final words to you, until we meet again, and that is if we do: be happy in even the most seemingly dark situations; an unexpected light may appear.

And I kept that letter as a final shred of remembrance. A shred of Kyzio. I knew he would come back to the den one day, but the only question now is:
